Sutton Overlook and Neosho Mine Complex Ouray, CO

This trail begins just south of Ouray on Camp Bird Road (County Road 361). The trailhead is not far up the gravel road on your left.

The trail starts off very steep, but the switchbacks reward you with amazing views of Ouray below. Nearly every turn has a photo-worthy panorama as you quickly ascend over 500 feet in the first mile. Use caution ascending and then descending this section as the steepness creates a loose surface. Trekking poles are a plus.

The trail undulates through the forest for the next mile before a final push to the preserved Neosho Mine Complex. Explore the blacksmith shop and living quarters before making your way back down the trail. On the descent you are treated to views of Black Bear Falls and the gorge.

  • Approximately 4.7 miles out-and-back

  • Steepness increases the difficulty

  • Recommend shoes with good soft- and loose-surface grip (poles are a plus)
